Modern Home Design Lighting

For large lofts, houses with tall ceilings or large entryways; a visually stunning chandelier is a must-have element.  A beautiful modern chandelier will be the first thing you and your guests will notice so make sure to choose a stylish lamp.  Large drop chandeliers are also perfect for stairways.  We love the Verner Panton Fun Lamp chandelier; an oversized capiz shell chandelier which was placed in the entryway of a modern house in Denmark.  This extra large chandelier is visually attractive; even when it is not lit. A simple breeze or hand stroke will stir the lamps and create a wonderful tinkling sound. A beautiful modern light fixture for the entryway or for homes with tall ceilings.

Perhaps 'the' most important element in the living room is the chandelier or pendant lamp since it is the focal point of any home.  Modern pendant light fixtures and contemporary chandeliers can add a refined statement to your living room design.  Many living room designs now also include the kitchen and dining area in one open space without divisions.  It is therefore even more important to choose a proper pendant lamp that can be enjoyed during any moment; day and night.  The luminous pendant light in the center of the above image is the Moooi Random Light; an airy modern design classic.

On our list of popular dining room pendant light fixtures we must not forget to include the legendary George Nelson Bubble Lamp.  They work well with any style of living room; traditional, modern, contemporary or transitional.  Make sure to select a living room lamp with an airy feel that doesn't take up all your free space.  Some of the newer pendant light fixtures and chandeliers appear like light-weight floating sculptural pendant lamps which helps to keep your decor airy and light.  If you have a large living room; you should consider a stunning chandelier such as this exquisite Murano Due Ether candelier, an wonderful Murano glass chandelier made with transparent glass droplets; again with a very airy feel and look (see below).

For a clean lined living room; choose a floor lamp and table lamp that compliment each other.  Take for example this beautiful modern house located in New York; both lamps create the perfect setting.  The table lamp is the Atollo Lamp and the floor lamp is the Flos Spun Floor Lamp.

Every kitchen deserves beautiful lighting; especially when you have an open floor plan.  Choose a couple of recessed ceiling spot lights that provide sufficient lighting; we are especially fond of the Italian design recessed spotlights by Leucos.  The Leucos Drop is a low voltage recessed light featuring a Murano glass diffuser.

You can have some fun with the lighting design for your kitchen counter however.  Although the above image displays 4 lamps in a row, most interior designers and architects specify 3 identical pendant light fixtures that can be suspended at equal heights in a row above the kitchen counter.  Choose a light fixture that is fun, attractive and provides a decent amount of illumination such as the Campari Light or the Fun 1DM lamps.  These lamps can be dimmed which is an added plus.   If you prefer a sleek minimal look; Alvar Aalto's minimalist A 110 pendant lamp is hard to beat (see below).

The best modern lighting for the modern lighting design house - modern lighting design for the entry, living room, kitchen or bedroom.  Illuminate your modern design house in style with beautiful modern light fixtures. Let's star with the living room lighting.  Every living room design contains a comfortable lounge chair or sofa. Place a functional reading floor lamp behind your chaise lounge or sofa when direct lighting is required. A good reading light is the Artemide Tolomeo lamp. It is easy to move around and can be switched on and off whenever you want to read a book. 

If you are looking for modern lighting for your living room design project; you will want to have at least one table lamp that makes a statement. Choose a classic modern design lamp with timeless appeal such as Achille Castiglioni's Snoopy Lamp. Place your modern table lamp on a dresser, cabinet, coffee table or on an end table in the corner of your living room. We suggest to add a dimmer switch so you can create a warm atmosphere at night by dimming the light source. Remember; you don't need much light to set the right atmosphere. Sometimes, less is more!

The next area that you should consider is the bedroom.  Lighting for the bedroom is often an afterthought although we all spend a big part of our lives in the comfort of our bedroom.  The lighting design for the bedroom should contain sine good reading lights that can be either wall mounted above the bed; choose two directional spotlights for each person.  In addition, a unique bedroom accent floor lamp, such as the Flos Arco Lamp, will complete the bedroom design.  Decorative wall sconces and a beautiful modern table lamp on a dresser will provide the finishing touch in your modern bedroom design.  Modern lamps like these are reasonable price and require a minimum of installation effort.  Pictured below is the beautiful wall-mounted Pistillino sconce which really sparkles at night.  The dresser is adorned with the beautiful Italian lighting design classic; the Medusa Lamp.  Decorative bedroom wall sconces and table lights should provide mostly ambient lighting for added atmosphere.  Refrain from using super bright lights in the bedroom; the only exception being your bedroom reading lights (below).

Larger bedrooms can also have one stylish floor lamp.  Consider a lamp that will provide a decorative element such as the classic Arco Lamp by Flos (below).
